Why Britt Baker Wasn't Signed by WWE and How She Was Signed by AEW

Britt Baker recently appeared on Talk Is Jericho and covered a wide variety of topics such as how she balanced dental school and wrestling at the same time, who became an early mentor in her wrestling career, her early encounter with Chris Jericho, why she wasn’t signed by WWE, receiving a call from Brandi Rhodes to become the first woman signed to AEW, her relationship with Adam Cole and so much more.

Britt spent a considerable about of time getting into great shape and invested money in her gear, so both really lead her to stand out.

Based on a recommendation from Rhino, who was a huge mentor to Britt Baker throughout her whole independent career, she submitted her material to WWE. His advice was WWVD, “What Would Vince Do?”

Very early on, she had communications with WWE and received her first tryout with them only after her first match. While inexperienced, she managed to catch someone’s eye.

Britt was forced to tell some lies to get out of school and the talent in her tryout included Bianca Belair, Lacey Evans, Velveteen Dream and Sonya Deville. All of those names including Britt were pulled aside to do an extra physical with the doctor, which is normally an indication that you are about to signed.

Britt Baker explained what happened next with WWE:

At the very end of the camp, Canyon Ceman pulled me aside (Senior Director of Talent Development for WWE and helps oversee NXT) and if you’re an independent wrestler, Canyon Ceman is like the gatekeeper. You shall not pass or come on in to the WWE. He told me, you really did impress a lot of people at this tryout but as a father, I have a really hard time pulling someone from a professional degree for this business. And my heart just sank. A couple weeks later, I received an email from him saying you have a lot of the qualities we look for, however, we don’t have an opportunity for us at this time, but if you have the passion to succeed in this, you will find a way to make this work throughout dental school. And I never forgot that. It didn’t work out with WWE but it worked to my advantage even better because I am able to do both both careers.

Britt Baker on settling on a dental school:

Once I graduated dental school, I knew I was going to come to Florida because that’s where my boyfriend (Adam Cole) is forced to live because he works with NXT. So, I was in touch with a few offices down here and they had everything I was looking for. Most importantly was going to be very leanent if and when I had to leave for wrestling. I knew I was going to make it work somehow where I got to do both.

Britt Baker would explain how she was signed with AEW:

I was working down here in the office at the time and I was doing Ring of Honor shows where I was seeing the Bucks and Cody and Brandi pretty regularly. A bunch of chitter chatter started coming around everywhere about oh my gosh, this new promotion might be forming and no one really knew what was going on. But it got more and more serious to point where Cody and Brandi had both asked are you signing with WWE. Are you signed anywhere? I said no, not yet and they said, don’t sign anything. And that’s it. No explaination. No nothing. Just don’t sign anything. I rememeber I was buying Christmas decoaraions and I was contacted by Brandi and basically laid it all on the line. There’s this new company. It’s going to be huge in huge arenas and on tv. We want to have you as the first woman to be signed to it. And I’m just like, wait, what? Obviously, I had so many questions, I ccouldn’t think straight at first, but the biggest question I got to tally off was that I could still be a dentist during the week. And that was one of my first conversations with Tony, was about how thankful I am that I get to do both of my passions. And that’s across the board in AEW. We all have our own little seperate lives aside from being there.
