Is Bret Hart or Brock Lesnar Mr. SummerSlam?

WWE

While Shawn Michaels is widely considered to be Mr. Wrestlemania, Bret Hart and Brock Lesnar are both in the running for Mr. SummerSlam, but who ultimately comes out on top?

To help determine Mr. SummerSlam, I’m going to provide the following:

  • SummerSlam Resume

  • Overall Record

  • Best Match

  • Number of Main Events

  • Championship Matches

Bret Hart’s SummerSlam Resume

✅Summerslam 88 - The Hart Foundation lost to Demolition as they retained their WWF Tag Team Championship

✅Summerslam 89 - The Hart Foundation lost to the Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard)

✅Summerslam 90 - The Hart Foundation defeated Demolition in a two-out-of-three falls match to capture the WWF Tag Team Championship (It still holds up as an incredible tag-team match)

SummerSlam 91 - Defeated Mr. Perfect to capture the Interncontenial Championship (A modern classic)

SummerSlam 92 - Lost the Interconential Championship to Davey Boy Smith in the main event in front of over 80,000 fans (Undoubtedly Davey's best match)

SummerSlam 93 - Defeated Doink The Clown (An odd follow up to his epic match from the year prior)

SummerSlam 93 - Lost to Jerry Lawler via Disqualification (Yes, Bret wrestled two matches on the same card)

✅SummerSlam 94 - Defeated Owen Hart in one of the greatest steel cage matches of all time to retain the WWF World Heavyweight Championship

SummerSlam 95 - Defeated Isaac Yankem, DDS (Based on the dentist gimmick, this match is often forgotten, but it was a respectable match)

SummerSlam 97 - Defeated the Undertaker to capture the WWF World Heavyweight Championship (Up until this point, it was Taker's best match)

SummerSlam 10 - Team WWE (Bret Hart, Chris Jericho, Daniel Bryan, Edge, John Cena, John Morrison and R-Truth) defeated The Nexus (Darren Young, David Otunga, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, Michael Tarver, Skip Sheffield and Wade Barrett)

Overall SummerSlam Record: 7-4

Best Match: Bret Hart vs Owen Hart at SummerSlam 94

Number of Main Events: 4

Championship Matches: 6

Brock Lesnar’s SummerSlam Resume

SummerSlam 02 - Dethroned The Rock for the WWE Undisputed Championship. (This ushered in the initial Brock Lesnar era and at the time, he became the youngest world champion in WWE history)

✅SummerSlam 03 - Lost the WWE Championship to Kurt Angle (It was undoubtedly the best match on the card)

SummerSlam 12 - Defeated Triple H by Submission in the main event

SummerSlam 13 - Defeated CM Punk in a NoDQ match (Not only was this the best match of the card, but one of my favourite matches from 2013)

SummerSlam 14 - Defeated John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (This was the infamous match where Brock Lesnar took John Cena on a one-way trip to Suplex City)

✅SummerSlam 15 - Lost to The Undertaker by Technical Submission (Despite the loss, this much-anticipated rematch was positioned as the focal point of the card)

SummerSlam 16 - Defeated Randy Orton by Technical Knockout (The outcome blurred the lines of reality since many felt Brock vicious elbows were intentional and legitimately hurt Randy who started bleeding profusely. Confused, Chris Jericho even confronted the Beast in Gorilla and demanded answers)

✅SummerSlam 17 - Defeated Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, and Samoa Joe in a Fatal 4-Way to retain the Universal Championship (Once again, Brock found himself in the main event)

✅SummerSlam 18 - Lost the Universal Championship to Roman Reigns (While Brock dropped the title, he enjoyed a reign of 504 days)

Summerslam 19 - Lost the Universal Champion to Seth Rollins (This was Brock’s 6th consecutive main event at SummerSlam)

Overall SummerSlam Record: 6-4

Best Match: Brock Lesnar vs CM Punk at SummerSlam 13

Number of Main Events: 8

Championship Matches: 6

If you’re basing this on Main Event matches, Brock Lesnar is the clear victor, but given the fact Bret Hart has one more victory, became a triple crown champion at the event and produced 5 classic matches, I’m giving the slight edge to The Hitman. Again, this was a razor-close decision.

Who do you believe is the true Mr. SummerSlam?
