The History of the King of the Ring Tournament

WWE

King of the Ring was first held in 1985 and was built as an elimination bracket tournament where sixteen wrestlers compete in an effort to advance against another winner. The winner is ultimately crowned King of the Ring where traditionally, they would sit on a thrown and wear a crown while holding a golden scepter.

Despite the inaugural event taking place 8 years prior, it wasn’t until 1993 when the King of the Ring debuted on PPV.

The only wrestler to have won the tournament twice was Bret Hart is 1991 and 1993.

The tournament is unofficially known as a launching pad for future main event talent or in some years, just essentially adding a much needed gimmick to the equation.

Today, I reliving the history of King of the Ring from the inaugural event in 1985 until the most recent King of the Ring tournament in 2019. Plus, I select Best King, Best Tournament, Best Performance, Most Important Moment and Best Match.
