Arn Anderson On The Origin Of The Four Horsemen

During the recent episode of Talk Is Jericho featuring Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson appearing together on a podcast for the very first time, Arn revealed the origin of the Four Horsemen faction and name.

Arn Anderson: “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. This is the God’s truth. When I say this, you’re going to be waiting for the story part and there is not a story part. In those days, we had like a 3, I want to say it was like a 3:38 interview slot, 3 minutes and 38 seconds. It just so happened that, I mean we had started to be intermingling and all that stuff. Different combinations of guys were having tags, but we all happened to be out on one promo, one day and we had to get it all done in 3:38 and there were three matches.”

Tully Blanchard: “Can I interject? Because we were in an 8-man tag match. It was the Anderson’s and Flair the cousin and just because I was wrestling the booker, I got slid in.” (laughter)

Arn Anderson: “So, there we stood, four of us and they started into their promos, whoever went ahead of me, I don’t remember. And I was just looking and counting heads and I don’t know how or why, but The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the biblical story of what they do and when it’s time, it popped into my head. Now, I’m a religious guy, certainly believe in God, but I’m not a bible thumper that it was in my pre-frontal lobe, it just popped in there, like promos, right? We don’t know how it pops in there we just roll with it. And I went into this deal. Hey, you’re dealing with, you know, you’re looking at Four Horsemen and never has so much damage been done to so many by so few.

Chris Jericho: “Wow!”

Tully Blanchard: “Literally! That’s how it happened.”

Arn Anderson: “And it literally was, and I just did that.”

Chris Jericho: “Put up the four fingers.”

Arn Anderson: “And the promo subsided and Tony Schiavone looked like somebody had just seen a ghost. He said, Arn, you just named you guys. That’s great! And we went, okay and whenever we got to that town and we went out there, I did it, he did it, everybody kind of did it, Ric did it and it was done.”

Chris Jericho: “And it became a thing.”

Tully Blanchard: “Yeah”

Arn Anderson: “And we didn’t even talk about it. They didn’t say, what the hell is that Four Horsemen thing you’re talking about?

Tully Blanchard: A month or two months afterwards, we were in the Greensboro Coliseum and in the tunnel we were watching and Jim Crockett was there and he said, Tully, this Four Horsemen thing is getting over, isn’t it? I was kind of sarcastic back in those days. I gave him some who shot John look and just kind of walked back in the dressing room.”

Chris Jericho: “But you never know what’s going to catch on. That’s like the Austin 3:16, just off the top of his head and suddenly people get into it.”

Arn Anderson: “And we just recognized it. It’s not like we really sat down and went okay, hey wait a minute, what just happened here? Let’s digest this. Just run with it.”
